Unblock Drain Yourself Solihull | What's Safe, What Isn't

Most drain calls I get don't need me. I'll say that upfront, because it's true and it saves people money.

Not every blocked drain in Solihull needs a van, a jet, and a camera. Some of them need a kettle, ten minutes, and a bit of common sense. The trade won't tell you that. I will.

The jobs you can genuinely sort yourself

If your kitchen sink is draining slowly, start here before you do anything else.

Boil a full kettle. Pour it down the drain in two or three slow stages, letting each one work through. A lot of kitchen sinks in houses I visit in Shirley and Lode Heath are slow because of a thin greasy film coating the pipe wall, not a full blockage. Hot water melts it. Free. Done.

If that doesn't shift it, try a plunger. A proper one, not the flat rubber disc designed for sinks, a cup plunger with a dome. Cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth so you're not losing suction. Twenty firm plunges usually tells you whether you're dealing with something moveable.

Still no joy? Unscrew the U-bend under the sink. Put a bowl underneath first. Nine times out of ten, that's where the gunk has gathered, matted hair, congealed fat, old soap scum. Pull it out, clean it, screw it back. You don't need me for that.

Same goes for a slow shower drain in a house built after about 1990. Hair is almost always the culprit. A Drain Weasel or Flexisnake, a few quid from any hardware shop, will hook out more hair than you'd believe a human can shed. I've seen Olton and Hillfield bathroom drains completely cleared with one of those and no professional help whatsoever.

If it smells bad but drains fine, that's often biofilm on the drain cover or the trap. Clean the cover. Pour a cup of bicarbonate of soda down, followed by white vinegar, wait twenty minutes, then flush with hot water. Doesn't fix every smell. But it fixes more than you'd think.

Where most people go wrong

They escalate too fast with chemicals. A bottle of drain cleaner from a supermarket goes in the moment the sink is slow. I've already written about what those actually do to older pipes. The short version: they're not the fix people think they are, and they make my job harder when I do arrive.

They also give up on a plunger after three half-hearted pushes. A plunger needs commitment. If you're not putting some effort in, you're not really plunging.

When you genuinely need to stop and call

Here's where I'll be straight with you.

Multiple drains backing up at once. If the kitchen sink, the downstairs toilet, and the bath are all slow or blocked on the same day, that's not three separate problems. That's one shared drain, probably on the main run, that's blocked or collapsed. Don't reach for a plunger. You need a jet and probably a camera.

A toilet that won't shift with a plunger after a proper go. Toilets block for different reasons to sinks. If plunging isn't working within a few minutes, whatever is down there isn't going to move without pressure or a drain rod. And if you can't clear it in the first attempt, stop. Rodding a toilet drain incorrectly can push a blockage further and make it a bigger job.

Any blockage in a shared drain or outside your property boundary. I had a job in Monkspath last month where a homeowner had been rodding what he thought was his drain for twenty minutes. It was a shared lateral, and he'd pushed the blockage into a neighbouring connection. What should have been an hour's jetting turned into half a morning's work. Know where your responsibility ends.

Water coming up through a manhole or flooding the garden. That's a sign the drainage system is overwhelmed or blocked at depth. Get off it. That's not a plunger job.

Any drain near tree roots. Older houses in Knowle, Dorridge, and Balsall Common often have clay pipes running under mature trees. Root ingress doesn't respond to plunging. It needs cutting equipment and a CCTV survey to find out how bad the damage actually is.

The honest caveat

I'm not saying have a go at everything first. I'm saying know what you're looking at. A slow sink that started slowly and is just your sink? Try the steps above. A sudden, total blockage that's affected more than one outlet? Don't waste time. Call.

There's no shame in either. The shame is in calling a drainage company for a U-bend full of hair, or rodding a shared sewer and making a problem worse because you didn't want to spend the money.
