Gutter Overflow vs Blocked Drain | How to Tell

Every autumn I get a run of calls from homeowners in Shirley and Olton who are convinced their drain is blocked. Water's pooling near the house, it's running down the brickwork, the path is soaked. Sounds like a drain, right?

Half the time it's a gutter full of leaves, or a downpipe that's cracked and dumping water straight onto the ground three feet from the drain. The drain itself is completely clear.

Before you call anyone, including me, spend five minutes working out which one you've actually got.

What Each Problem Looks Like

A blocked gutter or downpipe shows up in specific ways. Water overflows over the front edge of the gutter during rain, you can see it sheeting off. The overflow point is at height, not at ground level. Your walls are getting wet in the same spot every time it rains. The pooling is right next to the house wall, not further down the path or the garden.

A blocked or slow drain behaves differently. Water backs up at the drain cover itself. It rises slowly, sometimes taking minutes rather than seconds. It happens on a section of the garden or path away from the wall. In heavier blockages, water can come up through multiple gullies, or you'll get a smell.

One quick test: go outside when it's raining hard and watch where the water is actually falling from. If it's dropping off a gutterline, that's your answer.

The Two Fixes Are Not Interchangeable

A drainage company clearing your gutter isn't something we'd normally take on. And a guttering company poking around underground drainage isn't their territory either. They're different trades, different kit, different liability.

The One Factor That Decides It

Where is the water first appearing?

If it starts above the gutterline and works its way down, the gutter or downpipe is the problem. If it starts at ground level and works its way out from a drain cover or gully, you've got a drainage issue.

Downpipes are the grey area. A cracked downpipe can deposit water at the base of the wall, and the water then travels along the ground towards a drain. Looks like a drain problem, isn't one. Check the downpipe itself for cracks, separations at the joints, or a section that's pulled away from the wall bracket.

When It Actually Is Both

I had a job in Bentley Heath last October. Homeowner thought the drain on the side return was blocked. It was partly. But the real driver was a downpipe that had been dripping into the gulley for two years, carrying enough leaf debris to partially silt it up. We jetted the gulley and it cleared fine. Guttering company sorted the downpipe the following week. Problem solved properly.

So yes, sometimes a guttering fault can cause a secondary drainage problem. If you've had a leaking downpipe for a while, get both checked.

My Honest Recommendation

Start on the roof, not underground. Gutters and downpipes are cheaper and quicker to sort. If you've cleared them, or if they're clearly fine, and water is still pooling at ground level near a gully or drain cover, that's when you call a drainage engineer.

Don't pay for a CCTV survey before you've ruled out the obvious. I'd rather you called me with the right problem than have you spend money finding out the drain was fine all along.
