Emergency Drain Unblocking Solihull | What to Do

It's gone midnight. Water's rising in the downstairs loo, or there's a smell coming up through the kitchen floor that wasn't there an hour ago. You're not sure whether to call someone now or wait until morning.

Here's the honest answer: it depends on what you're looking at. Some blocked drains can wait six hours. Others genuinely can't.

First, work out what you're actually dealing with

One blocked fixture, say a toilet that won't flush or a slow bath drain, is usually a localised blockage. Unpleasant, yes. Emergency, probably not. You can manage it until morning.

Multiple fixtures backing up at once is a different story. If the toilet gurgles when you run the kitchen tap, or water comes up through the shower tray when you flush, the blockage is further down the system, in the main drain or near the manhole. That can escalate quickly.

Raw sewage coming up through a ground-floor drain or manhole is an emergency. Full stop.

What to do right now, before anyone arrives

Stop adding water to the system. Don't run dishwashers, washing machines, or showers. Don't flush the toilet more than once to check it. Every litre you put in is a litre that has nowhere to go.

Find your outside manhole cover. Lift it carefully with a flathead screwdriver if you can, and see whether it's empty or full. Full to the brim means the blockage is downstream of your property, between you and the sewer. Empty means it's inside the house, on the branch pipe to that fixture.

Keep children and pets away from any pooled water. Sewage overflow is a health hazard. If it's reached your kitchen floor, don't try to mop it into the sink.

Don't pour boiling water, bleach, or drain cleaner down it. At 2am, this isn't going to shift a solid blockage, and it complicates things for the engineer. Boiling water on a cold PVC pipe can cause cracking too.

What makes it genuinely worse overnight

The main risk with a backed-up drain isn't the smell. It's water finding somewhere new to go. Sewage can track back through floor gullies, under door frames, and into sub-floor voids. In older properties across Knowle, Olton, or Shirley, those sub-floors can be timber. Once sewage gets into a suspended timber floor, you've got a much bigger job than a blockage.

That's the point at which calling out-of-hours earns its cost.

Genuine emergency or can it wait?

If you're in a flat or leasehold property

Check your lease before you call. The drain from your flat to the stack may be your responsibility; the main stack and below usually isn't. If it's a shared drain issue and water is rising in multiple flats, your freeholder or managing agent needs to know immediately, not just you.

One thing people always get wrong

They assume the worst blockage must be closest to where the problem shows up. Not true. A blockage at the base of the soil stack, or out near the boundary, will back water up to whichever fixture sits lowest in the house first. That's often the downstairs loo or a ground-floor shower, even if nobody used either recently. Start with the manhole, not the fixture.
